Heat Pump Cost Calculator

This calculator uses official figures for what heat pump installations cost. Every grant-funded install in England and Wales is reported with its price, and the government publishes the figures. Enter the size to get the typical installed price for that size, the usual range, and what is left after the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant.

Not sure of the size? The heat pump size calculator works it out, the grant checker tells you which grant applies, and the grant guide explains the rules. For what it costs to run, see the running cost calculator.

The statistics record the unit fitted, which is usually the next size up from your heat load, so use the unit's rated size if you know it. For air source heat pumps with grants paid in April to June 2026, the median size was 8 kW.

How the installed price is worked out

When an installer claims the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, the price of the job goes on the MCS certificate. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero publishes those prices every month. The calculator reads the median, the middle price when every install in a size band is lined up, from the release published on 24 September 2026.

Typical cost = median cost of installs in your size band (April 2025 to March 2026)
Left to pay = typical cost - grant
Typical cost from the size calculator = lowest to highest band median across the unit sizes it lists

The prices cover equipment, labour and VAT, and are before the grant. The government leaves out the cheapest and dearest 10% and any zero prices. Heat pump installations in Great Britain have been zero-rated for VAT since 1 April 2022; HMRC's VAT Notice 708/6 says the rate returns to 5% on 1 April 2027.

Air source prices by size, April 2025 to March 2026

Size Median installed cost After £7,500 grant Installs
Under 4 kW£11,992£4,492239
4 to 6 kW£11,494£3,9944,206
6 to 8 kW£12,164£4,6648,054
8 to 10 kW£12,686£5,1868,526
10 to 12 kW£13,943£6,4433,994
12 to 14 kW£15,365£7,8652,824
14 to 16 kW£15,496£7,9961,245
16 to 18 kW£14,817£7,317956
18 to 20 kW£17,878£10,37890
Over 20 kW£24,080£16,580456

There are fewer ground source installs and their prices vary more widely. The calculator uses their overall median, £26,200 across 367 installs, for every size.

Cost of a heat pump for a 1930s semi with a 7.37 kW heat load

The 1930s semi in our heat pump size example has a heat load of 7.37 kW. The statistics record the unit fitted. For that load the size calculator lists a 7.5, 8, 8.5 or 10 kW unit, depending on the manufacturer's range, and its link brings those sizes here. With the standard £7,500 grant:

  • 7.5 kW, in the 6 to 8 kW band: median £12,164 from 8,054 installs, £4,664 after the grant
  • 8 and 8.5 kW, in the 8 to 10 kW band: median £12,686 from 8,526 installs, £5,186 after the grant
  • 10 kW, in the 10 to 12 kW band: median £13,943 from 3,994 installs, £6,443 after the grant
  • Left to pay: £4,664 to £6,443, depending on which of these units is fitted
  • Across all sizes, the middle half of air source installs with grants paid in April to June 2026 cost £11,128 to £15,627, so £3,628 to £8,127 after the grant

Off the gas grid and replacing an oil boiler, the same house would get £9,000 and pay £3,164 to £4,943 at the band medians, if the application is properly made by 31 March 2027.

Heat pump cost questions

How much does an air source heat pump cost in the UK?

The median cost was £12,908 for grant-funded air source heat pumps in England and Wales with grants paid between April and June 2026, and the middle half cost between £11,128 and £15,627, according to the government's Boiler Upgrade Scheme statistics published on 24 September 2026. That covers equipment, labour and VAT. The £7,500 grant takes the median to £5,408.

Does a bigger heat pump cost much more?

In the year to March 2026 the median 4 to 6 kW air source install cost £11,494 and the median 12 to 14 kW install £15,365. That is 34% more for more than twice the output.

How much does a ground source heat pump cost?

Around twice as much as air source. The median grant-funded ground source install cost £26,200 for grants paid in the year to March 2026, and for grants paid in April to June 2026 the middle half ranged from £18,136 to £42,110. The spread is wider than for air source.

Are these prices before or after the grant?

Before the grant, as far as the statistics show. The government asks installers to report the full price including the grant value, though it notes this may be interpreted differently by different installers. The calculator takes the grant off for you. Since 28 April 2026 installers have had to deduct the grant from the price you pay upfront, so the price you are given should already show the lower figure.

Will heat pumps get cheaper?

They have in real terms. The median air source install for grants paid in April to June 2026 was £12,908, 11% below the same quarter of 2023 after allowing for inflation, according to the same statistics. In cash terms the quarterly median has stayed between £12,082 and £13,600 since the scheme began in 2022.
